Purple Centers Baguio staff pose outside the center and in front of stockpiles of sorted non-biodegradable waste (assorted plastics, glass, etc.) that the community has collected off the garbage trucks. The collectors and junk shops buy and sell based on market prices for recyclables,.
The Purple Centers Baguio serves 100 children and families who live in the Irisan dump site area of Baguio, a mountainous community 5 hours north of Metro Manila.
The Baguio center has five staff offering school tutorials, school lunches, social work services and livelihood projects. The center has an active parents’ association, raising funds for the centers’ enhancement and programs. The center aims to one-day be a self-sufficient people’s organization.
